South Cambie - Peter Raab

South Cambie is located between Oak Street and Cambie Street and stretches from W16th in the North to West 41^st in the South.

The land was given to the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1800’s but much of it stayed undeveloped till the 1940’s.

Today South Cambie remains one of the smallest neighborhoods in Vancouver with a population of 6,995 people and the average age being between 20-39 years old. The average income in this area is $84,727. The Typical South Cambie home was built in 1987. This neighborhood has a very quaint feel and look; it attracts mostly families due to its location and ease of transportation to school, parks and downtown Vancouver.

South Cambie is best known for it’s medical facilities including: BC Children’s Hospital, Health Center and Shaughnessy Hospital. It is also known for its heritage structures and Tudor style buildings, like the 1912 Fairmont Academy built on Heather Street. This Tudor style building was designed by Samuel Maclure and now is used as a RCMP training facility.

Transportation to and from South Cambie has recently become much easier due to the construction of the Canada Line prior to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics which included a stop at Cambie and 16^th ave. It travels between Richmond, YVR and downtown Vancouver.

There are many community and business centers in South Cambie including: YMCA, Vancouver Parks, and Oakridge Shopping Center. South Cambie attracts many families based on its ease of travel, quite neighborhood feel and proximity to medical/ educational facilities.
